Big Brother

ABOVE: Top still from the Michael Radford film. BOTTOM: (Left) From the rarely seen 1965 TV adaptation, (Right) Big Brother poster from the 1958 Hollywood film version.

In the novel, Big Brother is only seen as a photograph on a propaganda poster or image on a telescreen. Indeed the question is asked wether Big Brother actually exists. His physical appearance is only briefly described by Orwell, as:

  • “The face of a man of about forty-five, with a heavy black moustache and ruggedly handsome features”.
