Room 101

  • “You asked me once, what was in Room 101. I told you that you knew the answer already.
Everyone knows it. The thing that is in Room 101 is the worst thing in the world.”

Room 101 is the torture chamber inside The Ministry of Love. The Party know each persons worst fear and use this to utterly break them. For Winston Smith it is rats. Orwell based Room 101 in part on his experiences of the BBC and the political vetting that used to go on in its conference room on the first floor. There is also a theory that the headmaster’s study, in his old school St Cyprians’ was a model for Room 101. In 2003 the artist Rachel Whiteread exhibited a cast of Room 101 of Broadcasting House at The Victoria and Albert Museum. Room 101 was also the title of a BBC2 TV programme, where celebrities were invited to banish their pet hates into Room 101.
