The Salford Covers

In 1961 Penguin launched its ‘Modern Classics’ series. Editor Tony Godwin decided that modern authors were producing work deserving the status. By 1966 Nineteen Eighty-Four had appeared in a Penguin Modern Classics edition of the book, which featured a section from ‘The Control Room, Civil Defence Headquarters’ by William Roberts which is in Salford Museum and Art Gallery’s collection.
